EDIT, rev 2 After watching @DougSharpe solution to stopping phantom traffic lanes, I can't help but point out that we are indeed, fucking doomed without some kind of autonomous driving technology truly takes over. In the meantime, I propose a solution; gamify safe driving by rewarding hypermilers and citizens who obey the laws of traffic. It's absolutely bananas out there, be safe... Orignal Edit: Do you or a loved one suffer from city planning and design? Know of a potentially dangerous intersection? Well. Fuck that lane. Let me know where it is so I can document it and bring attention/accountability to those responsible. Backstory: I had a job that required me to take 87 up to the Bronx. On my way back down south approaching the George Washington Bridge, I nearly got into an accident; I was abruptly cut off and was squeezed between one car and another car merging from the adjacent on-ramp. The truck that cut me off blew his horn as he thought he was in the correct lane. I thought I made a giant error and put others in danger. I nearly collided with the car trying to merge and I had to take a very aggressive maneuver to avoid the truck cutting me off. Luckily, I narrowly avoided an accident and thought nothing more of it until driving home the next day and it happened again. The next day I got cut off at the same exact spot! As I approached, I made sure to watch as closely I as could and ensured I was in the correct lane. I very clearly saw that the person in the lane to my left abruptly changed lanes where he/she unwittingly merged into my lane thinking they had the right of way. This incident stuck with me for a while. My temporary job in the Bronx was done but I decided to return and see how often this happens firsthand. After about 45 minutes of recording, I had more than enough footage of near accidents. This was no anomaly, this was happening far too often. I wonder how many accidents or near accidents there are at this portion of the parkway? I bet there’s an insurance agent foaming at the mouth watching this. I don’t understand exactly what it is about these lanes causing drivers to decide at the last second to switch, but I know one thing is for certain: Fuck That Lane
